Homemade Dog Food Recipe (A Farmer's Dog Dupe!)

Updated: Aug 6

I never thought I’d be the person making homemade dog food, but here we are—and I’m so glad I started. After trying The Farmer’s Dog (which our pup loved), I realized I could create a similar version at home for a lot less money—and honestly, I’ve found this to be even more effective for our dog’s digestion and energy.

So today, I’m sharing my go-to recipe that replicates their turkey recipe. It’s packed with healthy ingredients and easy to make in bulk—we freeze ours so we always have some on hand!

Ingredients:

    •    2–3 bags of lentils

    •    2–3 lbs of ground turkey

    •    2 large sweet potatoes

    •    3–4 whole carrots

    •    A few big handfuls of fresh spinach

How to Make It:

    1.    Cook the lentils according to the package instructions. I usually do this first since they take the longest.

    2.    While the lentils are cooking, brown the ground turkey in a large skillet or pot.

    3.    In a food processor, combine the raw carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach. Pulse until it’s chopped finely but still has a bit of texture.

    4.    Once the turkey is fully cooked, stir in the veggie mixture and cook for about 5 more minutes until everything softens and blends together.

    5.    Finally, mix in your cooked lentils and stir until it’s all evenly combined.

That’s it!

We portion ours out and store it in freezer-safe containers—that way we always have meals ready to go and nothing goes to waste. Our dog eats this up (literally) and I feel good knowing exactly what’s going into his food.

If you’re considering a switch or just looking for a more affordable, whole-food option, give this a try! And if you make it, let me know how your pup likes it.

Happy tails, 🐾
